Orange Shirt Day is a day when we honour the indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada and learn more about the history of those schools. Between 4,000 and 6,000 innocent, pure children died in residential schools. These causes of deaths included physical and sexual abuse, malnutrition, disease, and neglect. Others died by suicide or by trying to escape the schools. Residential schools systematically undermined Indigenous, First Nations , Métis and Inuit cultures across Canada and disrupted families for generations, severing the ties through which Indigenous culture is taught, sustained and contributing to a general loss of language and culture. As a student here at East, I encourage all of my  fellow peers to come together and take the time to educate yourselves on these movements.

As we begin our day, we acknowledge and honor the original inhabitants of our various nations of Wisconsin. As we currently reside on the traditional unceded territory of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin, and the Ho-Chunk Nation, we acknowledge these nations, people, and communities both past and present, as well as future generations. This acknowledgement demonstrates our sustained commitment to building authentic relationships and coalitions with all members of these Nations and communities.
